History of St. Francis' Church, Northwest River

St. Francis' Church in Northwest River is really a mission of St. Andrew's in Happy Valley- Goose Bay, in that there is no congregational structure of vestry, wardens, etc; all the administration is done through St. Andrew's. The Anglican congregation does not own a church building, but worships in the Northwest River United Church, a lovely structure built in 1933. We take our turn holding services there as do the United Church, the Moravian Church and the Salvation Army. We find that our congregation is usually ecumenical, including people from these three denominations; as there is only one service per week, the regular church-going residents of NWR will come to worship no matter which denomination is holding the service that day.

Personnel

At the moment the parish is served by two full-time priests and two non-transitional deacons: the Venerable Jennifer Gosse is the Rector of the parish and Archdeacon of Labrador, the Rev. Marlaine Leggo is the Associate Priest, and the Rev. Chesley Lethbridge and the Rev. Jean Shears volunteer their time as our parish deacons. Ms. Debbie Blake is the local lay reader.

History of St. Andrew's Church, Happy Valley-Goose Bay

St. Andrew's Church
The Parish of Lake Melville (or the Parish of Happy Valley as it was originally known) was established in 1957. Prior to this the people who lived in the area were served by the priest from the Parish of Cartwright on his bi-yearly trips up the Labrador coast. Deacon Chloe Adams came to serve the people in December of 1956, and then the first rector was appointed, the Rev. Stewart Payne, in 1957. The church and rectory in Happy Valley were built by the residents, with the cornerstone of St. Andrew's church being laid in August of 1959 and the finished building being dedicated in November of the same year. Since that time St. Andrew's has been the main point of the parish, which also included Northwest River and, at times, Rigolet.
